Gideon Freudmann's music is a unique, improvisational blend of classical, blues, jazz, electronic, funk and folk. In his performances and recordings, Gideon uses an electric cello to riff imaginatively on musical conventions and traditions. At times atmospheric and often playful, his signature sound exists in its own unique dimension: nuanced, intricate and fun!

Gideon uses technology to create music that is passionate, complex, creative and compelling. He loops and layers his sounds with pedals and amplifiers, sculpting orchestras out of thin air. Gideon's catalog of 24 released CDs of solo and collaborative work explore traditional combinations of acoustic instruments, as well as esoteric mixes involving sitar, shakuhachi, world percussion, ukulele and much more.

Pursuing his mission to make the cello hip, modern and joyful, Gideon tours extensively, performing solo or in small ensembles across the Pacific Northwest and worldwide. His notated compositions (mostly for three to eight cellos) are performed by groups around the world. His music is commissioned for film, television, theatre and dance. Gideon also composes and performs live soundtracks for classic silent films and his music is frequently commissioned for film, television, theatre and dance.

Gideon has a large catalog of electric and acoustic instrumental music and songs that are both spontaneous and immediately accessible, it is no wonder film, television and radio producers seek it out. Gideon regularly contributes to NPR's "All Things Considered", "This American Life" and "Car Talk". His music has been licensed for TV ("Weeds"), Sundance award winning films ("Denmark" and "Buck"), among others (see list below). His music has also been used for advertising campaigns by Apple, Chrysler, Princess Cruises, Cesar's Dog Food, American Express, UPS, Adobe Create, Columbia Sportswear and Microsoft.

Gideon hails from New England, where he performed, inspired and taught a new generation of aspiring cello players. In the mid-2000s he moved to Portland, Oregon, where he founded a jazz swing combo called Caravan Gogh. Gideon is a founding member and contributing composer for the Portland Cello Project In addition to working with those bands, Gideon continues to perform as a soloist and to compose soundtracks for art performance projects.

Gideon started playing cello when he was eight. His father introduced him to classical music and, after hearing a cellist play at a concert, Gideon fell in love with the instrument. He played classical music but also enjoyed experimenting with sounds and applying his cello skills to other musical genres. His gift for playing with sounds eventually found expression in CelloBop. Gideon lives by a maxim he's developed over the years: "If you love doing something, do it every day."
